Rain Can Damage Your Property, Be Careful

Rain can be a delightful and much-needed part of the seasons. But when it falls on an unprotected roof, it can do a lot of damage to your property. Read this blog for information about how to protect your home with roofing systems like roof coatings or rubber roof sheets.

When you own a house, getting started with your home maintenance checklist is always in order as soon as spring comes around each year following the winter season. And there's a good chance that your roof maintenance is at the top of your list. However, you need to keep in mind that rain and wind can cause extensive damage to your roofing system as well.

Roof
When heavy rainfall hits the roof, it can cause rapid erosion and damage to your home's very thin asphalt shingles. Additionally, when the rain falls onto your roof, it can cause water to pool up and start to erode the rubber roofing shingles underneath. This process can cause leaks and even potential damage to the components of your home.

Foundation, Windows, and Doors
Water that gathers on your roof and then slides down onto the windows, doors, or other parts of your home can cause further damage. This is why you should have a rain gutter system installed to help prevent this water from becoming a problem. You may also want to consider installing a French drain around the bottom of your foundation when you are looking at systems to protect your home from rain.

Gutters
If your gutters become clogged with leaves, dirt, or other debris, water will build up and start to cause water erosion behind the shingles. This is why you must clean out your gutters and make sure they have a good foundation. If they don't have a good foundation they may not be able to properly direct the water into your downspouts.

Siding
When the entire roof of your home gets wet, it can cause the shingles underneath to become slippery and decrease their ability to protect your home. There are also potential problems with being exposed to water on the sides of your house as well. If you notice that these areas are getting wet, be sure to look into protecting them with Hurricane Shutters or other systems that will keep them dry. The same goes for any siding you have. Make sure that you have a good foundation and gutter protection for it as well.

Garden Area
When it rains and the water that falls onto your garden area gets piled up, you may find that water begins to pool on the soil. As this water wicks its way into the ground and crosses your root system, roots may be damaged or even destroyed. The same goes for plants that are planted in your garden. A good rain gutter system will be able to direct water away from the foundation of your home so that it does not soak up any unnecessary damage.

It's also important to note that if you find that your gutters are still clogged even with a good rain gutter system installed, there may be problems in your rainwater collection system. In this situation, you need to contact a professional for assistance.

Interior Damage
When water drips down onto your siding or windows, it can quite easily soak up into things like carpets, furniture, and even walls in your home. In addition to this, water that seeps in through cracks around windows and doors can cause damage to the edges of your home. This is why you should consider insulating the walls around windows and doors with Hurricane Shutters as well.

Pools of standing water outside also have the potential to cause damage to home foundations as well. If water pools up and starts to collect in low-lying areas near your foundation, it can cause problems for your basement or crawl space. This is why you must get rain gutters installed around your home so that the water runs off and doesn't pool up onto any parts of your property.

If it starts to rain when the sun is shining and you are already wet from a workout, don't go for your umbrella or glove. Stay in the shade, or at least sit inside!
